DIGITAL POP: MOVING LIGHTLY, a Group Exhibition at the Ojai Valley Museum

"Digital Pop: Moving Lightly" will electrify the gallery at the Ojai Valley Museum from February 15 to April 7, 2024. This group exhibition offers a glimpse into contemporary art by Ojai Valley locals made with light, digital video, animation, and motion graphics.

In July 2022, the museum hosted its first BYOB (Bring your own Beamer/Projector) gathering. BYOB is a worldwide pop-up event model created by Rafaël Rozendaal, a well-known digital artist interested in exploring projection as a medium. The components of a BYOB are simple: provide a place, invite artists, and ask them to bring their projectors for a pop-up group showing. Over the last year and a half, the museum has hosted two one-night BYOB events between exhibitions, inviting local creators to show up and participate through an open call. These popular happenings illuminated a group of new media artists working in our community. It also spotlighted a strong interest in experimental video art, a historically underrepresented genre in the Ojai Valley art scene.

"Digital Pop: Moving Lightly" is an 8-week exhibition born from a desire to extend the energy brought to the museum by the BYOB events and to celebrate the voices and perspectives of local experimental artists working in non-traditional media. Participants play with a mix of sculptural and electronic components, break expectations of moving imagery, and push display boundaries with interactive works. As each artist provides a diverse perspective on art and technology, the curation invites our community to experience a collective of new ideas, a well-spring of inspiration, and an expanded sense of representation.
